Announcing Fedora 7 (Moonshine)

Howdy, cousins! Welcome to our little Fedora hollow, where we’ve brewed up some mighty, mighty Fedora 7 Moonshine for your enjoyment. Here, I’ll help you pour that … and some for me … *cough, cough* Smoooooth … sure does taste good. It’s been sitting here in the jug for almost a whole month now! What’s the most important thing to do if you are upgrading your Fedora version? Why, that’s easy! Read the release notes, it prevents hangovers:

What are new things to do with your Moonshine?

* Mix and remix this Moonshine to come up with as many flavored drinks as there is Joe-Pye weed in the Appalachians. Want an OS to send home with the students or staff? Add packages, remove packages, spin it any way you like. Let a thousand distros bloom!

* Bottle up that custom mix and call it an appliance. ISV building an appliance product? Make an RPM, identify the minimal number of packages needed for an appliance around that RPM, then build a distro and a live image. Easy as moon pie.

Gol’ darn, but this is good ’shine. *hic* There, is that enough? No? Here, let me pour us some more, and we can toast the most important part of this Moonshine — the makers. You thought I made it? Oh, no. No special elite brewmaster here, I’m just a bartender, and this log is my bar! Ha ha. No, really … see …

Fedora 7 is the first release where the development was one hunnerd and one per-cent in the community. How? It’s simple, cousin — all he code was merged into a single external repository. Why? Same great distribution quality, even more high-quality developers able to work directly with the code and improve the flavor of over 7500 packages.

Grab that jug, look inside, and you find:

* KDE? Yep, with Moonshine, Fedora and KDE are gettin’ downright friendly with each other.

* Laptops? A tickless kernel means better power consumption for laptops; extended wireless functionality, meaning more chances hardware will Just Work. Yee-ha!

* Get those Live images, burn CDs or DVDs, and share them with your friends and neighbors. This is the first Fedora distribution with full Live CD/DVD capability.

* Interoperability? Let’s start with resizing and reading of NTFS file systems. How about those Liberation fonts, d’you like how they just slip right in where other fonts were used?

* Why stop with just one fruit jar of virtualization? This release includes support for KVM and overall more virtualization capability.

* As always, tasty new graphics for the Fedora 7 desktop, as well as an updated Website look and functionality, including a new build and package update system.

Ternyata Line-In

Beberapa bulan ini, ketika saya switch dari Windows XP Media Center (original! bawaan laptop) ke Fedora Core 6 yang sudah terinstall dengan baik di Toshiba A105 saya, ada satu masalah yang sangat mengganggu. Kalau memainkan musik, atau film, suara yang dihasilkan selalu berisik, ada suara, tapi seperti speaker pecah, kresek-kresek istilahnya.

Ternyata masalahnya simpel, channel Line-In (yang secara fisik memang tidak ada di rata-rata perangkat laptop), mendistorsi suara. Atas saran kawan di milis tanya-jawab, saya coba untuk mematikan (mute) semua channel kecuali PCM dan atau Master di alsamixer (atau volume control). Betul aja, setelah coba-coba, saya temukan bahwa channel line-in-lah biang keroknya. Saya coba, asalkan volume line-in berada di bawah posisi < 50, suara kresek sudah hilang, walaupun masih ada suara angin/hiss yang cukup mengganggu. Ketika di-mute, suaranya sempurna

Walaupun rada-rada BASBANG, lega aja rasanya telinga ini

Ngomong-ngomong soal Fedora, sebentar lagi (24 Mei) Fedora 7 rencananya akan di rilis. Ya, Fedora, bukan Fedora Core. Mulai rilis ke 7 ini, Fedora Core & Extras akan digabung, jadi cuma 1 repository resmi, tidak ada lagi Extra, tidak ada lagi Core. Sementara repository lain (non free seperti livna) sepertinya tidak banyak perubahan (saya sendiri masih belum terlalu jelas :P).

Ironisnya, ketika Fedora 7 udah mau keluar, request DVD bulan ini untuk FC6 dari Indonesia justru sangat banyak, biasanya 1 atau 2, (bahkan tidak ada waktu bulan Maret) bulan ini, baru tanggal 3 aja udah ada 7 request yang sudah diterima. Saya sempat menanyakan ke milis freemedia, tapi disarankan untuk tetap mengirim FC6 sampai bulan Mei berakhir. Jadi untuk teman-teman yang ada niat ‘memesan’ DVD via fedoraproject.org, saya sarankan bulan depan aja.. biar dapat yang Fedora 7 sekalian

Saya sendiri masih bingung nih, pas keluar Fedora 7 nanti mau dapat DVDnya darimana, sejak FC6 rilis dulu saya udah jadi fakir bandwidth soalnya. Jatah bandwidth Speedy yang 1 GB dikali dua dengan jatah kantor pun nggak cukup untuk 1 DVD. Udah gitu kalau mau nge-request, lah yang distribusikan gratis untuk wilayah Indonesia selama ini ya cuma saya sendiri… Nanti ajalah, siapa tau ada malaekat yang kirim DVD hehehe

Lebih Setahun lagi

Abis baca-baca e-mail, dapat informasi rilis Fedora Core 7..

Good Idea, kalo perlu gabungin aja livna & the gang kapan ya mimpi itu bisa jadi kenyataan..

Kalo liat skedul di atas, FC7 baru akan rilis lebih dari setahun dari sekarang, bahkan 1,5 tahun dari FC6. Bagus juga sih, kalo nggak ya capek upgrade mulu :).. Apalagi kalo tenggat rilis 6 bulanannya benar-benar ditepati..
Nah, berhubung rilis FC7 masih lama, artinya sekarang adalah waktu yang baik untuk bongkar-bongkar FC6 yang akhirnya terinstall juga di PC bututku. Yang konyol, FC6 baru aja jadi bonus di Infolinux edisi Januari ini, padahal baru aja gw beli bulan Desember yang lalu di gudanglinux… rugi-rugi untung… lumayan lho 60rebuan totalnya

Pertanyaannya sekarang, apa bakal sempat bongkar2nya kalo lagi musim sibuk kaya gini? Mending ke gym kali, gw udah overweight neh

long week

Minggu yang sangat melelahkan. Bukan saja ada training linux di kantor untuk saya dan kawan-kawan, tapi juga karena minggu ini, tepatnya kemarin dan hari ini adalah hari terima raport buat anak-anak SMA.
Seperti biasa, dikejar deadline memang sux! Saya kemarin sampai kelelahan dan memutuskan untuk istirahat sebelum sakit lebih parah.
Training linux-nya sih asyik, dibawain oleh om Irwin, ‘mbahas beberapa hal tentang linux, dari yang sederhana sampe yang cukup sulit. Memang kondisi kawan-kawan di kantor tidak semuanya kenal linux, makanya materi training juga terlalu beragam. Tapi secara keseluruhan sangat menolong, khususnya buat rekan-rekan di Pare-pare nanti.
Ah.. sudah waktunya pulang, cuma mo nyetor posting doang di awal bulan.. ntah kapan diupdate lagi

Update!

Salah satu pekerjaan rutin saya adalah..

Updating Windows!
Bulan ini, setidaknya ada 8 Update yang harus di-download oleh pengguna Windows XP Service Pack 2, seperti saya di rumah (dual-boot) dan hampir semua PC di kantor kami. Update ini hampir semua adalah Security Update for Windows XP. Satunya adalah Critical Update for IE for Windows XP SP 2, dan yang terakhir Update untuk Malicious Software Removal Tool, dengan kode KB, KB890830 (sampai hafal, karena tiap bulan pasti ada selama 9 bulan terakhir ini!).

Di Linux, saya juga sering melakukan update, dan jumlah update di linux (Fedora tepatnya) lebih banyak daripada update di Windows. Namun yang membedakan ialah komentar dan jenis updatenya. Di Windows, hampir semua update adalah Update dengan alasan keamanan (Security), yang mana bila tidak di-update, ada resiko untuk terkena virus, worm, spyware, atau sebangsanya. Pasti ada hole ini atau itu, yang memungkinkan tereksekusinya kode berbahaya yang dapat merusak di Windows.

Cukup berbeda dengan update di Linux. Update yang tersedia di Linux tidak melulu bersifat tambalan terhadap kelemahan atau hole software, tetapi lebih kepada update yang benar-benar update :), yaitu penambahan fasilitas atau perbaikan fitur dari software tersebut. Lupakan soal worm, virus dan sebangsanya. Jadi update di Linux, benar-benar update, sementara di Windows? Saya lebih suka menyebutnya, Patch, atau Tambalan

Makanya, Pakai Linux!
(susahnya menjadi orang dual-boot :P)

Firefox 1.0.7 is out!

Not a usual thing for this blog to inform a release of new software.. But, what the heck. My Firefox update-notifier pops-up on the bottom right corner of my screen, I clicked it, and.. There is a new Firefox on earth. Be sure to grab one!

DSL-Stick

Long time no post.. it’s hard to start writing again

Then, let’s just start with pictures:

Mobile computing has come to a new era with this technology. The pictures you have seen above is a picture of my workstation at MCEC(Makassar Cyber Education Center), with a DSL(DamnSmallLinux) running. The distro I use daily is Fedora Core, which is installed on the hard drive of the pc you’ve seen above. But, using just a simple USB(Universal Serial Bus) Flash Drive, my machine is now running DSL, live.

The 512MB flash drive is a gift I give myself on my 25th birthday just recently :P, and it (I call it Jogr) is loaded with 2 linux distros on 2 partitions, one is DSL, which you’ve seen, and the other is SLAX, killbill edition. Too bad my machine cannot boot from SLAX, The BIOS only sees one partition of the Jogr, the first one, which contain DSL.

The installation of DSL is quite simple, and could be done from a running linux, with a simple 5 steps of installation, which you can read/find at DSL’s ftp server/mirrors. While the installation of SLAX was done using Window$, with a tool called MySlaxCreator or something like that

The other great thing about DSL, the OS can start in an ongoing Windows or Linux; OS inside OS, using QEMU. All you have to do is run a simple script called dsl-windows.bat (for windows) or dsl-linux.sh (for linux). And you have yourself a running copy of DSL right inside of your current Operating System.

This is something else, this is great, this is quite a revolution.
